Accelerate Labs round table report | The future of laboratories

We must start implementing them as the fundamental way we design going forwards..

An interesting subject was discussed around the business case or affordability of automated testing.. As in the other areas, could common operations or key equipment in laboratories be shared? This model is adopted in other arenas where equipment is simply too expensive for one party to own and operate but can be provided as a service or on a rental basis.

Although at a conceptual level this was thought to be a good idea, there are several issues to overcome.Location, IP and, interestingly, tribalism. The fierce independence and competitiveness of laboratory operations is an antagonist to sharing and cooperation..

Sustainable, future labs. The sustainability of laboratories was high on the agenda.

There was a tacit understanding that designers and engineers needed to sort out the buildings and services and that operations managers would work on what goes on inside the buildings.

This may be another representation of tribalism..These schemes were designed to be delivered using DfMA (Design for Manufacture) techniques and required extremely close collaboration between Architect and Engineer, a collaboration which culminated in Richard joining Bryden Wood some years later.. Richard’s Engineering background coupled with a strong cross discipline understanding enables him to harness the full breadth of skills at Bryden Wood, with a particular focus on the delivery of hi-tech and complex facilities, where appropriate using DfMA and Offsite delivery techniques.

Richard has experience of running design projects across a number of sectors including Healthcare, Education, Pharmaceutical/Process, Commercial, Aviation and.Alongside project focussed work at Bryden Wood, Richard is also responsible for contract and commercial management within the practice.Together with Mark Bryden, Martin founded Bryden Wood Associates in February 1995.. From 1989-95 Martin worked with Nicholas Grimshaw at Grimshaw Architects on a collection of the UK’s most influential buildings, several of which have become iconic examples of the ‘Hi-tech’ movement.

The 1990s saw significant change in the design and construction industry with the widespread adoption of computer aided design and methods of construction that are now commonplace.Martin was fortunate to be part of the vanguard and worked with some of the chief protagonists of 20th century design and engineering..
